Debut Week-End

After finally getting the fridge plugged in and the car actually attached to the caravan (only took 3 goes which I think is pretty impressive), we headed off for our debut week-end in the caravan.  We even remembered to put the fridge over to DC before heading off.  This is one of the very few things I remember because it stands for D'Car (DC), doesn't it?

Being our first trip, we decided not to venture too far out of town and headed to Woodgate which is a quiet beachside town just outside of Bundaberg with miles of beautiful white sandy beaches.

Woodgate is located between Bundaberg and Burrum Heads and is a great place for fishing - not that I have first-hand experience of this, it has a nice safe swimming beach, which is also dog-friendly, there are lovely picnic tables and electric BBQs along the esplanade and it's also a great spot for kayaking at Theodolite Creek.  There's also a hotel and club but the town still has that sleepy, old-fashioned country feel.

We booked into the caravan park because we don't yet trust ourselves to go free-camping.  We haven't even used the toilet yet and as for turning the fridge over to gas - that is at least three or four trips away.  We've only just managed to use AC & DC.

The caravan park manager put us into the "Learners Section" which meant we could just drive straight onto the site - no reversing necessary.

Fortunately, we had the practice run at home so we felt like old hands.  It only took 3 attempts to get the awning out and 2 attempts to get the roof up (long story!).  The Sauvignon Blanc was beautifully chilled so we were able to sit back, relax, enjoy a drink and congratulate ourselves on how good we were to get everything set up in about 15 minutes.

Well, not quite everything.

The hose didn't quite reach the tap, the TV didn't work and we forgot the IPOD.  Not bad for a first go.  On the plus side, we had plenty of wine, good food, fishing rods, kindle, Webber Q and, most importantly, beautiful weather.

We enjoyed an early night - probably because there was no TV, and woke up to the sun coming in through the curtains (definitely need to remember to pull the curtains closed properly) and I glimpsed a tiny sliver of grey hair on Steve and thought, yes, we are definitely trainee grey nomads!

We wandered down to the beach before breakfast and it was picture postcard perfect.  The ocean was sparkling turquoise blue and the sand whiter than usual and only a handful of people walking and fishing on the beach.

I could certainly get used to this lifestyle and look forward to many more trips away.
